Transplants

Transplantable tissue and organs include: heart, kidneys, liver, lungs, pancreas, intestine, bone, heart valves, tendons, saphenous vein, skin and eyes.

The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) maintains the national patient waiting list in its computer in Richmond, Virginia. All transplant hospitals and organ recovery personnel have access to the database. There is no set amount of time a patient will have to wait and no way to know how long a patient must wait to receive a donor organ. When a transplant hospital adds a patient to the waiting list, his or her name is placed in a pool of names. When an organ donor becomes available, all the patients in the pool are compared to that donor.
